coal and steel

Ruda Śląska is known as a city of districts rather than of one centre. It was formed in 1959 by joining the towns of Ruda and Nowy Bytom, and each of its parts grew up as a separate place: Nowy Bytom holds the town hall, Wirek does the shopping, and Halemba is still known for its working coal mine. The name itself points to ore, dug here since early times, and the 19th century brought rapid growth in coal, steel and zinc. The Muzeum Miejskie im. Maksymiliana Chroboka keeps that story, while the Ruiny zamku w Rudzie Śląskiej recall a past older than any mine.

Its position explains a great deal. Ruda Śląska lies in the Silesian Highlands at the very heart of the Upper Silesian industrial district, on the Kłodnica River, and shares borders with Zabrze, Bytom, Chorzów and Katowice inside the Metropolis GZM. It also sits on the watershed between the Vistula and the Oder.

On a map the districts fit together like a patchwork quilt, and anyone who grew up here can point to their own patch – Kochłowice, Orzegów, Bielszowice – long before they say the city's name.
