The Roman road from Mediolanum to Ticinum, Milan to Pavia, ran through Rozzano, and the town still sits on that line, a short way south of Milan with the Lambro Meridionale and the Naviglio Pavese crossing its land. It was pieced together from hamlets: Napoleon added Torriggio, Cassino Scanasio, Pontesesto and Quinto de' Stampi, the Austrians undid most of it, and the union was finally completed under Vittorio Emanuele II.

What makes Rozzano unusual is how much green survives between its housing estates and office towers. It lies inside the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano; the Oasi Smeraldino is named after the green toad it protects, and the Parco delle Rogge stretches across old Rozzano to the border with Basiglio. In Cassino Scanasio, the Castello di Cassino Scanasio keeps its four corner towers and a Visconti snake carved over the gate, while an old spinning mill once drew its power from the canal.

If you know Rozzano as more than a stop on the way into Milan, wear it with the castle, the canal and the toad's oasis on your chest.
