Fog and canals

Rovigo is the town of the Polesine, the low, flat land between the last stretches of the Adige and the Po, and of the Torre Donà, the tall medieval brick tower left over from the town's castle. The city stands on the Adigetto Canal, between the Adige to the north and the Canal Bianco to the south, in fields criss-crossed by drainage and irrigation channels.

Anyone who knows it will think of the fog first. Between early autumn and early spring the plain fills with mist, frost settles on the fields at the edge of town on winter nights, and summers bring a heavy, humid heat broken by thunderstorms. There is the walk along Corso del Popolo too, the broad avenue laid out where the Adigetto used to flow before it was diverted to the west of town, and the old centre gathered around the Tempio della Beata Vergine del Soccorso ("La Rotonda") and Palazzo Roverella.

Still, it is the Torre Donà that most people from Rovigo picture first, all that is left of the old castle, rising high above the flat land. Coming across the plain, it is the landmark that tells you that you are nearly there, and the one worth having on your shirt.
