About Rovereto

Known for

Bell of the Fallen

Known for

City of the oak

Known for

Depero's futurism

Rovereto takes its name from oaks: the Latin Roboretum meant a wood of oak trees, which once grew thickly in the valley, and an oak still spreads its branches across the town's coat of arms. For centuries it was a fortress on the frontier between the Republic of Venice and the Prince-Bishopric of Trent, later an outpost of the Habsburg County of Tyrol, and in the eighteenth century its schools and academies earned it the name Athens of Trentino.

People from Rovereto speak of it with quiet pride: the city of the oak, the city of peace, the home of the priest and philosopher Antonio Rosmini. They remember the cool breeze that comes down from the Vallarsa along the Leno on summer evenings, snowy winters in the Vallagarina, vineyards on the valley floor, walks in the bosco della città and the climb to the hermitage of San Colombano above its lake. The front of the First World War ran close by, and the Castello di Rovereto now holds the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra, while the Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero gives the town a bolder, more playful side.

Above it all, the Campana dei Caduti tolls for the fallen of every war. That bell is a good reason to carry Rovereto's map with you: this is a town that chose to remember.
