Rock festival
Which Roskilde do you know – the cathedral town, the Viking harbour or the city of the annual rock festival? It is all three. Roskilde lies west of Copenhagen on Zealand, at the end of Roskilde Fjord, and its history reaches back to the pre-Christian Viking Age, when it grew up as a hub of land and sea trade. For centuries it was the capital of Denmark.
What sets it apart is how much of the country's story is gathered in one small city. Roskilde Domkirke, Gothic and on the UNESCO list, holds the tombs of Danish monarchs; Vikingeskibsmuseet shows the well-preserved remains of five Viking ships; Roskilde Museum and Rockmuseet carry the story on to the present. Absalon, the bishop who founded Copenhagen, came from here, and so did the writer Lise Nørgaard. The town also has the oldest railway station still in use in Denmark, a university and two lively pedestrian streets.
Live elsewhere long enough and the first glimpse of the cathedral above the hills becomes the moment you know you are back home.
