Roman Pons Aeni
Wood and college city
Inn and Mangfall
Did you know that Rosenheim began as a Roman river crossing? Where the road from the Brenner to Castra Regina met the route from Iuvavum to Augusta Vindelicum, the Romans placed a military station called Pons Aeni, the bridge over the Inn, and the settlement kept that name for some five hundred years. Traces of it survive in local place names such as Langenpfunzen and Leonhardspfunzen.
The Mittertor is a good place to pick up the later story. Rosenheim castle was first mentioned in 1234, on the hill above the Inn, and from there the town grew from a market into a salt-trading town, then a railway junction, and finally the wood and college city it is today. The Holztechnisches Museum, the Inn-Museum and the Städtisches Museum Rosenheim each tell a part of that journey, while the Lokschuppen and the church of St. Nikolaus belong to the everyday centre. All of it stands at the confluence of the Inn and the Mangfall, on the bed of a lake left behind by the Ice Age.
If you have crossed the Inn here more times than you can count, this map is for you: the confluence, the old streets and the mountains waiting just beyond town.
