Known for

Nærøysundet strait

Down by the water at Kystkultursenteret Norveg, the acclaimed museum building designed by the architect Guðmundur Jónsson, Rørvik looks out over the Nærøysundet strait towards the mainland. It is the home of the Norwegian Coastal Museum, a centre for coastal culture and the care of old vessels.

What sets Rørvik apart is how completely it belongs to the sea. The town grew up because the steamships began calling here and the post office followed, and Hurtigruten has called at Rørvik since the very first year it sailed. Today its schools train people for life at sea, and the town lies on Inner-Vikna, on the eastern side of the Vikna archipelago. The old Rørvik church burned down, and a new Rørvik Church has since been consecrated.

Growing up here means knowing the strait, the quay, Rørvik fort and the hills of Munken and Gluggfjellet. It also means gardens with plum and apple trees, far further north than anyone elsewhere would expect, and a map that brings all of it back.
