Known for

Rørosmartnan

Røros is known for copper and for cold: a mining town built on Røros Kobberverk, listed by UNESCO together with the Circumferensen, and one of the coldest places in Norway. Locals call it Sta'a, and many of them still live and work in the dark-timbered wooden houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, gathered around their courtyards. Firms such as Røros Tweed keep the town busy long after the last mine closed.

Most people remember Røros by its seasons. There is Rørosmartnan in February, the Christmas market among the old wooden houses in December, and the outdoor musical drama Elden in high summer. There is the museum at Sleggveien, the smelting house at Rørosmuseet Smelthytta, and Røros Church standing over the rooftops.

The Southern Sami have herded reindeer here for as long as anyone knows, and in their language the town is Plaassja. Whatever you call it, coming back to Røros means coming home to a town that has never stopped being lived in.
