Belleville hill
Fort de Romainville
Paris Métro line 11
The name says a lot: Romainville comes from the Latin for 'Roman village', and in 1867 it was large enough to give up part of its land, together with pieces of Pantin and Bagnolet, to create the new commune of Les Lilas.
The town sits at the eastern end of the hill of Belleville, a few kilometres from the centre of Paris, bordered by Les Lilas, Montreuil, Bagnolet, Noisy-le-Sec, Pantin and Bobigny. Its identity is that of a Seine-Saint-Denis town that keeps its own character: the Fort de Romainville, the Regard des Maussins and the Parc départemental de la Bergère all belong to it, and the Jardin Serge Gainsbourg adds a green corner. Its schools are named after Marcel Cachin, Paul Langevin and Gabriel-Péri, and it is twinned with Casalecchio di Reno, Jericho and Benfleet.
Today line 11 of the Métro reaches Romainville-Carnot in the town centre, and the Hôtel de Ville, completed in 1873, is still where the town's business is done.
