Saltdal Fjord
Alt For Rognan
Have you ever stood at the very head of the Saltdal Fjord, where the E6 and the Nordland Line both run past the water? That is Rognan, the administrative centre of Saltdal Municipality, at the innermost point of the Skjerstad Fjord. In Sami it is Råggno or Rågno.
Rognan carries memories of fire and of boats. The village was long known for boatbuilding and for a school that taught the craft. Its centre burned in 1914 and again in 1979, when sixteen houses were lost on a single January day and the cause was never found. Just east of the village lay the Botn prison camp during the Second World War. Blodveimuseet and Saltdal bygdetun keep the valley's past in view, while the nature reserves at Skansenøyra and Fiskvågvatnet protect the land around it. Today the work is in optical cable at Nexans and at Hepro, and in summer small planes use Rognan Airport.
Many Norwegians first met the village in 2006, when ten local men set out to put on a show at Chat Noir in the TV series Alt For Rognan. For those who live here, it is simply the fjord, the valley and home.
