Twin church towers
The Roer and Meuse
Limburgish life
The towers of the Sint-Christoffelkathedraal and the Munsterkerk give Roermond its famous skyline, rising above a town centre that has been declared a conservation area, at the point where the Roer meets the Meuse.
What makes daily life here distinctive is how much of the past is simply part of the furniture. Locals call the place Remunj in Limburgish. The Romans built a bridge over the Roer, the Steene Brök, and founded the first settlement where the suburb of Voorstad Sint Jacob lies today. The town belonged to the Duchy of Guelders, joined the Hanseatic League in 1441, and has been the seat of a Catholic diocese since 1559, a role that still shapes its character.
Shopping streets run between churches and monuments, the Kruiswegpark and the riverside nature of Vuilbemden lie a short walk away, and the Cuypershuis museum sits right in town. The cathedral tower is the one thing everyone here can point to from anywhere, and the reason a map of Roermond feels like home.
