Ringsted sits in the very middle of Zealand, and that position has made it one of Denmark's busiest transit towns: the railway lines from Copenhagen towards Funen, Jutland and the south of Zealand all meet at its station. The station lies on the southern edge of the historic centre, beside the bus station, so daily life here begins and ends with a short walk into town. The square in front of the church leads into the shopping streets, and there are two shopping centres, RingStedet and Ringsted Outlet Center, plenty of cafés and a local brewery, Dagmarbryggeriet.

Skt. Bendts Kirke itself is the great monument, a Romanesque former abbey church where medieval Danish royalty lie buried, and where Zealand's assembly, the landsting, later met. Ringsted Vindmølle, Dagmarbrønden and the town park, Ringsted Lystanlæg, are names every local knows. In summer a mobile tourist office opens on the square, and the handball club TMS Ringsted has long been part of town life.

On the medieval coat of arms, the hand of God hovers above the Virgin and Child, with three figures in worship around them.
