Known for

Builders and hauliers

At the foot of the Gedenknaald Ter Horst, the monument to the town's old jute factory, you are standing on the story of modern Rijssen. When the mill closed in the face of Asian competition, its workers started their own businesses, and Rijssen became a town of builders and hauliers.

There is something stubborn and proud in that. Rijssen received its city rights in the thirteenth century, joined the Hanseatic League, and still rings its evening bell, the signal that once told everyone the town gates were closing. The Rijssens Museum keeps the older history, and the hills of the Rijsserberg and the Koningsbelt lift the land a little. Locals call the place Riesn.

Come back after a long time away, hear that bell at dusk, and you know exactly where you are.
