Village life

Inside Pöytyän Kisariihi, the sports hall whose name borrows the riihi, the threshing barn, from the village itself, Riihikoski gathers for games, training and the ordinary bustle of a small community. Riihikoski is a village and the built-up heart of Pöytyä, a rural municipality in Southwest Finland, and it shares the role of administrative centre with Kyrö.

What sets Riihikoski apart is how much of a whole municipality's life fits into one village. Before Karinainen joined Pöytyä, this was the only urban area in the municipality, and it still holds the municipal hall, the health centre, the pharmacy, the library and the school that takes children all the way through their basic education. Two grocery shops, a post office counter and a petrol station complete the picture, all along a main road that links the village with the rest of the region. Pöytyä itself has grown over time as first Karinainen and then Yläne joined it, and its neighbours include Aura, Lieto, Loimaa, Mynämäki and Säkylä.

If you learned to ride a bike on these streets, borrowed your first library book here or played your first match at the Kisariihi, this map is yours to keep.
