Ouwehands Dierenpark
Rhenen is known for the Cunerakerk, a late-Gothic church whose relics of Saint Cunera once drew pilgrims from far around, and for Ouwehands Dierenpark, the zoo on its doorstep. Both sit in a town that feels quietly unhurried for all the history it holds.
The town lies where the southern tip of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug meets the Rhine, so its streets climb and dip more than you would expect in the Netherlands. The Grebbeberg rises right beside it, Kesteren lies across the river, and the villages of Elst and Achterberg belong to the same municipality. Daily life keeps a gentle rhythm: a Thursday-morning market, shops and cafés in a centre rebuilt after the fighting of May 1940, walks along the Uiterwaarden Neder-Rijn, and the Stadsmuseum Rhenen for a rainy afternoon.
The Grebbeberg is where Rhenen's story keeps returning, from early medieval ramparts to the battle that bears its name, and it is reason enough to carry this hilly corner of the Rhine with you.
