Omsund Bridge
Frei town hall
Island of Frei
Until 2008, Rensvik was the administrative centre of Frei Municipality, and the old town hall is still in use, with part of the municipal services left there after Frei became part of Kristiansund. The village lies on the northern part of the island of Frei, just west of the Omsund Bridge, which carries the main road into Kristiansund across to the island of Nordlandet.
The Omsund Bridge is the landmark everyone here knows, the point where Rensvikbakken runs down to the water and the island ends. Locally, Rensvik means the land west of the lake Rensvikvannet, from Skjærahøgda in Bolga in the south to the bridge in the north, though the settlement also follows the Omsundet down to the old town hall, where Treskulpturen Frei rådhus belongs. Kvernberget, Høgåsen and the bay of Bolgvågen fill in the rest of the map. The name itself comes from a farm by the sound.
Growing up here meant Rensvik skole, then Frei ungdomsskole, football on the artificial pitch by the Omsundet, and the shops and the garden centre of an ordinary week. On the map those routes are all still there, between the bridge and the lake.
