How many cities can say that kings came to them to be crowned? Reims can, and its people carry that past lightly, with a glass of champagne within easy reach.

The city lies on the Vesle, on the western edge of the chalky Champagne plain and on the northern fringe of the wine region north-east of Paris. Founded by the Gauls as the capital of the Remi, it became a major Roman city, and later the place where the kings of France were anointed in the Cathédrale Notre-Dame. With the Palais du Tau beside it and the Basilique Saint-Remi, named for the bishop who baptised Clovis, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between the great monuments, the streets show off Art Deco façades, and champagne remains part of everyday life and work.

If you grew up here, you know the view of the cathedral towers above the rooftops better than any postcard. Keep that view with you, wherever you happen to be.
