Reggio Emilia Approach
Inside the Museo del Tricolore you are a few steps from the council chamber where, on 7 January 1797, the Italian flag was shown to the public for the first time — the reason Reggio Emilia calls itself the City of the Tricolour. The town is much older than the flag. It grew up on the via Emilia, the Roman road that the consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus laid from Piacenza to Rimini, and its people simply call it Reggio.
What sets it apart is its shape. The old town keeps the hexagonal outline of its vanished walls, entered through gates such as Porta Santa Croce, and most of its main buildings, Palazzo Magnani and the Palazzo Vescovile among them, belong to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Reggio is one of the birthplaces of Parmigiano Reggiano, lends its name to a celebrated way of teaching young children, and wears the gold medal of the Resistance for its part in the liberation.
Anyone who has moved away knows the moment of coming back along the via Emilia, crossing the Crostolo and seeing the hexagon close around them again.
