About Regensburg

Steinerne Brücke

Known for

Medieval old town

Known for

Danube

Regensburg sits at the northernmost point of the Danube, where the Naab and the Regen flow in and the river is forced east, with Stadtamhof and the two inhabited islands of Oberer Wöhrd and Unterer Wöhrd strung between its arms.

Walking through the old town feels like stepping into a city that never quite left the Middle Ages – it is the biggest medieval city site north of the Alps, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006 – and yet it is full of ordinary life. Students from the university fill the lanes, the car and electronics plants keep the city working, and people cross the Steinerne Brücke on their way to somewhere else entirely. The Dom Sankt Peter rises above the rooftops, the Porta praetoria recalls the Roman fort of Castra Regina, and the Basilika St. Emmeram and the Altes Rathaus sit a short stroll apart. For a while the city even hosted the Perpetual Diet of the Holy Roman Empire.

If you have ever spent a summer evening by the Danube with the Dom Sankt Peter behind you, you already know why this map belongs on you.
