Former imperial capital
How many towns can say they were once the capital of the Western Roman Empire? Ravenna can, and afterwards it served the Ostrogothic Kingdom and the Byzantine Exarchate too. Today it is the capital of mosaics: eight of its late Roman and Byzantine buildings make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Early Christian Monuments, and the city still has workshops and schools that teach the craft.
The Palazzo di Teodorico carries the name of the Ostrogoth king who defeated Odoacer and ruled Italy from here. Close by stand the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia, the Battistero Neoniano and the Battistero degli Ariani, the names residents reel off whenever a visitor asks where to start. The city lies inland, yet the Candiano Canal ties it to the Adriatic, and its territory is so vast that only Rome's is larger.
Put Ravenna on a shirt and you carry the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia with you: one of the reasons people cross the world to see this town, and part of everyday life for the people who live there.
