Randers Regnskov

Known for

Half-timbered houses

Canute the Holy minted coins in Randers, and gathered men here for a planned attack on England. The town has traces from Viking times, and in the Middle Ages it grew into a thriving market town, burned and rebuilt more than once but always returning to trade along the river.

What sets Randers apart is the water. The Gudenå, Denmark's longest river, runs through the town and out into Randers Fjord, and the green banks of Gudenåparken follow it through the centre. Randers Regnskov, the tropical zoo, keeps the largest artificial rainforest in Northern Europe, and Houmeden is the oldest pedestrian street in Denmark. Half-timbered houses from the fifteenth century still stand, as does St Martin's Church from the same age. During industrialisation Randers became one of the country's most important factory towns.

Museum Østjylland and Håndværkermuseet i Randers keep that long story, Memphis Mansion and Den jyske hingst are part of the map, and together they make a town worth carrying with you.
