Farming country
Østfold railway
Forest and lakes
Rakkestad sits on the eastern line of the Østfold railway, north of Sarpsborg, surrounded by rolling, wooded hills and some of the most important farmland in the country. Roads fan out from here to Halden, Mysen, Sarpsborg, Fredrikstad and Askim, and the local trains to Oslo start and end at its station.
Growing up here means growing up with the land: grain fields, cattle and dairy farms, forest paths marked for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter, and lakes cared for and restocked so that anyone can fish them. Even the coat of arms is a row of clover leaves standing for farming, forestry and the newer trades. Rakkestad bygdetun keeps the old rural life in view, and Hjemmefrontmuseet, Rakkestad is the local museum of the home front.
Picture the Rakkestad River meandering slowly through the farmland, home to many of the more than twenty kinds of freshwater fish recorded in the municipality.
