Zamek Piastowski w Raciborzu was home to the Dukes of Racibórz, and the country they ruled still frames the town: the upper Oder running through the Racibórz Basin, the Opawskie Mountains to the west, the Silesian Upland to the north and the Moravian Gate opening to the south, towards the Czech border.
What sets Racibórz apart is how far back it goes. It is one of the oldest towns in Upper Silesia and, with Opole, one of the region's historic capitals. Its townspeople held the right to brew in the early twelfth century, and their beer was drunk across Silesia and in neighbouring Czechia; Browar Racibórz keeps the name going. Inside the castle, the Kaplica zamkowa pw. św. Tomasza Kantuaryjskiego is known as the pearl of Silesian Gothic.
On the map, find the spot where the old trade route from the Moravian Gate to Kraków once crossed the Oder. That is where Racibórz began.
