River confluence
Have you ever crossed one of Quimper's little footbridges and stopped to watch the rivers meet? That is the town in a single moment: its name comes from the Breton kemper, "confluence", and daily life still follows the water through the centre. The pedestrian streets of Vieux Quimper are lined with crêperies and half-timbered houses, and shops and flags celebrate the town's Celtic heritage.
Quimper lies where the Steir, the Odet and the Jet come together, in the far west of Brittany, at the crossing of four main roads. It is the prefecture of Finistère and the old capital of Cornouaille, Brittany's most traditional region, a place where music and dance belong to ordinary life. The Cathédrale Saint-Corentin, with its Gothic façade and fifteenth-century stained glass, rises above the old town, and the Musée Départemental Breton and the Musée des Beaux-Arts keep the region's story close at hand.
Anyone who grew up here carries the map without needing to look at it: the rivers, the footbridges, the cathedral towers above the rooftops.
