market town
Beemster polder
Waterland
Purmerend is known first as a market town. Count Jan van Egmond gave it the right to hold annual and weekly markets in 1484, and once the Beemster and Purmer lakes were drained, the farmers of that fertile new land brought their produce here to sell.
What makes Purmerend distinct is the water it no longer has. It began as the fishing village of Purmer on a strip of land between three lakes, and today those lakes are polders that surround the town on every side. Willem Eggert, an Amsterdam banker, built a castle here and founded the town around it, though the castle itself was demolished long ago. Since the 1960s Purmerend has grown into a busy commuter town for Amsterdam, but the Purmerends Museum is there for the older story, and forts such as the Fort benoorden Purmerend still guard the polder edges.
Cross the canal into the old centre on market day and Purmerend feels like what it has always been: the place the whole region comes home to.
