Polish Athens
first Polish museum
the Vistula
In Puławy, an ordinary afternoon walk can take in Świątynia Sybilli, Dom Gotycki and Altana Chińska, a trail of follies from the days when the town was known as the Polish Athens. Then it is back to everyday life in a town of chemical plants, research institutes, a river port, two bridges across the Vistula and four railway stations.
Muzeum Czartoryskich is the reason Puławy is in the history books. After Poland lost its independence, Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski and Izabela Czartoryska turned their palace into a museum of national memorabilia and a centre of cultural and political life, and Puławy became home to Poland's first permanent museum. The town lies on the Vistula, at the edge of the Lesser Polish Gorge of the Vistula, where the Kurówka flows in, and it forms a tourist triangle with nearby Kazimierz Dolny and Nałęczów.
Pałac Marynki is the quiet one among the town's grand buildings, the kind of place locals keep for themselves. That is the Puławy worth carrying with you.
