Kokemäki River

Did you know that Pori was founded on the coast, and that the coast has been slowly moving away from it ever since? Post-glacial rebound keeps lifting the land, so today the open sea lies around ten kilometres from the centre, and the city's harbours have moved out to Mäntyluoto and Tahkoluoto. Pori sits on the estuary of the Kokemäki River, facing the Gulf of Bothnia, and the river and its delta shape the whole town.

Juséliuksen mausoleumi is among the best-known sights in town, Rosenlew-museo keeps local history, and Kirjurinluoto is a name every resident knows. The bear of Porin karhu nods to the old Swedish name, Björneborg, the Bear Fortress. Out on the coast, the long sandy beaches of Yyteri draw crowds every summer.

If Pori is where you heard your first jazz concert or learned to swim at Yyteri, you will find both the river and the shore here, the same distance apart as ever.
