Car and aircraft industry
Roman aqueduct name
Campania's first airport
In the piazza del Mercato, where the baron's governor once had his residence, old Pomigliano d'Arco still gathers around its churches: San Felice, where the first walled village grew, and Santa Croce, which gave its name to the borough built outside the walls. Around this core lies the newer town, built in the sixties and seventies for the families who came to work in the factories.
The Parco Giovanni Paolo II and the Parco delle Acque give the flat streets some green, on land that was once marsh and still feels humid when the wind comes down from the Campanian Apennines. Pomigliano's sense of itself is tied to work: its industrial area is one of the largest in southern Italy, with the Gian Battista Vico car factory, the Elasis research centre and aircraft engine plants. During the Second World War it had a large military airfield, later used by the RAF, and in the sixties it was home to Campania's first airport. The name itself recalls the arches of a Roman aqueduct that once crossed the plain.
For anyone who grew up here, with a parent on shift at the plant, the map shows the grid of streets north of Vesuvius where all of that happened.
