Ancient Lavinium
Pomezia is a town that did not exist until the twentieth century. It was built from scratch on land won from the Pontine Marshes, inaugurated in 1939 and settled by poor farming families brought down from Romagna, Veneto and Friuli. After the war it turned industrial, above all in medicine and pharmaceuticals, and the Monumento dei Coloni Fondatori di Pomezia keeps the first settlers in view at the heart of town.
It lies south of Rome on gently sloping volcanic ground between the Colli Albani and the Tyrrhenian coast. Within its borders is Pratica di Mare, where the ancient port of Lavinium once stood; the Museo Archeologico Lavinium and the heroon of Aeneas tie this young town to a far older legend. The flat land below the hill is now an air force base known for its air shows, and along the shore Torvajanica keeps a stretch of dunes.
If your family came here to farm the reclaimed fields or to work in the plants, you know Pomezia was made by people who arrived from somewhere else and stayed. This map is the town they made.
