early medieval stronghold
Ben Gurion's birthplace
astronomical observatory
Did you grow up by the Płonka, in the town that astronomers, writers and dreamers have all passed through? Płońsk began as a stronghold built in the late 10th century, and the Grodzisko, the old fortified mound, still marks the spot.
The town stirs mixed and deep feelings. It is the place where David Ben Gurion was born in 1886, where Henryk Sienkiewicz once worked as a tutor, and where Jan Walery Jędrzejewicz set up an astronomical observatory and weather station. It was a lively garment-making centre, home to Poles and Jews alike, and it suffered terribly in the Second World War; the Dom Pamięci keeps that memory. Granted town rights in 1400, it sat on the trade route linking Toruń with Brześć.
Today Płońsk is green and unhurried, with the Park miejski, the Błonie Płońska and the Park przy starym grodzisku close to home. That old mound by the river, where the town first began, is a fine thing to carry with you.
