former capital
Cathedral Hill
Vistula escarpment
From 1079 to 1138, under Władysław I Herman and Bolesław III Wrymouth, Płock was the capital of Poland, which is why it still calls itself the Ducal Capital City of Płock. It was the main city of Mazovia long before Warsaw rose, and in 1180 it gained a school that still teaches: Małachowianka, the oldest existing school in Poland. Daily life today runs between that heritage and the present – Poland's largest oil refinery, the seat of the Mariavite Church and a busy cultural and academic centre.
The city sits high on the bank of the Vistula in central Poland, at the western side of the Masovian Voivodeship. Cathedral Hill, Wzgórze Tumskie, overlooks the river, and together with the Zamek książąt mazowieckich and the Katedra pw. Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, where Polish monarchs lie in their sarcophagi, it is listed as a Historic Monument of Poland. The Muzeum Mazowieckie adds the region's story.
If you went to Małachowianka, or simply walked the escarpment above the Vistula on an ordinary evening, this map is yours.
