Leaning Tower
Maritime republic
University city
Pisa is known around the world for its Leaning Tower, but the tower is one chapter in a much older story. Excavations have shown that this was an Etruscan city, with the tomb of an Etruscan prince to prove it, and later a Roman colony and then one of the great Italian maritime republics, whose emblem still appears on the ensign of the Italian Navy.
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, built between 1063 and 1118 in the Pisan Romanesque style, is the heart of the Piazza dei Miracoli, a World Heritage site where the Torre di Pisa leans beside it as the cathedral's bell tower and the Camposanto Monumentale closes the square. Back in the city, more than twenty other historic churches and a row of medieval and Renaissance palaces face one another along the Lungarno, and the University of Pisa reaches back to the twelfth century.
If Pisa is where you studied, fell in love or simply grew up, take the tower with you: it has been leaning for centuries and still has not fallen.
