Piotrków Trybunalski is known as the place where Polish parliamentary life took shape: the first general sejm of the Kingdom met here in the fifteenth century, and later the Crown Tribunal, the highest court of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, sat in the town – which is where the 'Trybunalski' in its name comes from. The name Piotrków itself goes back to Piotrek, a familiar form of Peter.
The Zamek Królewski w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim still stands in the old town, among tenements, synagogues and churches such as the Kościół pw. Świętego Jakuba Apostoła and the Kościół Akademicki Panien Dominikanek Matki Bożej Śnieżnej. The synagogues belonged to one of Poland's oldest Jewish communities, destroyed in the Holocaust, and their presence keeps that history in view. The first settlement grew up between the valleys of the Strawa and the Strawka, on a plain with hardly any forest.
If you grew up here, you know that history in Piotrków is not kept behind glass – it is something you walk past on the way to school.
