Pessac-Léognan wine
Monnaie de Paris
Ever told someone you are from Pessac and watched them think of wine? It makes sense: the commune gave its name to the Pessac-Léognan appellation, and estates such as Château Pape Clément still sit among the streets of Bordeaux's second-largest suburb. Belonging here means more than a label on a bottle, though.
Cité Frugès, the experimental workers' housing Le Corbusier built in 1926, is one of the reasons Pessac matters well beyond Gironde; it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2016. The town is also home to Bordeaux Montaigne University, the Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux and the main production facility of the Monnaie de Paris, so students, mint workers and winegrowers share the same tram line into the city. To the west, the Landes de Bordeaux begin, with woods such as the Bois de Saige.
Château La Tour Haut Brion and the Maison Frugès Le Corbusier are the landmarks residents point to with pride, and exactly what makes a map of Pessac worth wearing.
