The griffin

Do you know Perugia as the jazz city, the university city or the Etruscan city? It is all three at once. The capital of Umbria spreads over a high hilltop above the valleys of the Tiber, hosts the Umbria Jazz Festival every July and the International Journalism Festival every April, and has been a student town since its university was founded in 1308, joined later by the University for Foreigners.

The Collegio del Cambio is where Perugino painted the frescoes of the Sala del Cambio, and eight more of his pictures hang in the Galleria nazionale dell'Umbria; Raphael may well have been his pupil. Around them the old streets run along the ridges between gates such as Porta di Sant'Angelo and Porta Eburnea, past the Fontana Maggiore and down to the Rocca Paolina, with the Pozzo Etrusco hidden beneath it all.

Look up as you walk and you keep meeting the griffin, the city's symbol, on plaques and statues above the doorways — the same creature the local football club carries.
