the covered bridge
the University
Lombard capital
Have you ever walked across the Ponte Coperto at dusk, with the Ticino sliding underneath and the old town rising on its terrace above the river? If you know Pavia, that view needs no explaining.
The Basilica di San Michele Maggiore is the church Pavians are proudest of, a reminder that this quiet university town was once a capital: of the Lombard kingdom for two centuries, then of the medieval Kingdom of Italy, and later the seat of the Visconti court. The Basilica San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, the Broletto and the Torre Civica belong to that same long story. Today the town is known above all for learning: the ancient University of Pavia sits alongside several other universities and colleges, and the Orto Botanico is part of the same world. Beyond the houses, the Ticino valley park reaches into the municipality with the woods of Bosco Siro Negri and Bosco Grande.
Wear Pavia and you wear the covered bridge, the Romanesque churches and the river at the city's feet. Whether you studied here for a few years or grew up a few streets from San Michele, it is your Pavia.
