Pyrenees panorama
Birthplace of Henry IV
Capital of Béarn
Pau looks out over the Gave de Pau towards the whole chain of the Pyrenees, with the hillsides of Jurançon in between, and its Boulevard des Pyrénées offers a view that Lamartine ranked alongside the view of Naples from the sea. Spain is only a mountain pass away, the Atlantic a little further.
That sense of space is what stays with people from Pau. Generations of locals have grown up with the mountains as the backdrop to every walk along the boulevard, and with a quiet pride in the town's past: Henry IV was born in the Château de Pau, built to guard the ford across the river, and Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, born here too, went on to become king of Sweden and Norway. In the Belle Époque, wealthy winter visitors, many of them British, filled the villas and the casino, and the Wright brothers made Pau an early capital of flight.
Take the map home and you are back on the Funiculaire de Pau, climbing to the boulevard, with the Parc Beaumont ahead of you and the snowy peaks lined up behind.
