Duchess Anna's fairs
Ostrów Mazowiecka is known as an old royal town of Masovia, granted its rights in 1434 by Duke Bolesław IV and later home to a residence built by King Sigismund II Augustus. In 1514 Duchess Anna gave it four annual fairs and a weekly market, and the town has kept her memory ever since.
The Muzeum - Dom Rodziny Pileckich is the place many visitors seek out first, a family house turned museum that brings a hard chapter of Polish history close. Nearby, the Replika dworu (grodu) myśliwskiego książąt mazowieckich recalls the dukes who hunted in these parts, and the Pomnik Księżnej Anny Mazowieckiej honours the duchess behind the fairs. The town's people fought in the Kościuszko Uprising and the January Uprising, and memorials mark the sites where insurgents were executed. Its Jewish community, at the end of the 19th century more than half the population, suffered a massacre at German hands in November 1939.
Today life moves between the market square, the Galeria Sztuki Jatki and the poplars of Topolowy Zakątek. Coming back here from the road to Warsaw, you know exactly where you belong.
