Kurpie folklore
the Narew
river meadows
Kurpie folklore has a town of its own, and it is Ostrołęka, on the Narew, where the culture of the surrounding forest country is kept in the Muzeum Kultury Kurpiowskiej. It is also a working town: a railway junction with lines to Białystok, Warsaw, Olsztyn and Małkinia Górna, and the site of the Ostrołęka Power Station.
The river meadows give the place its feeling, and its name: they are the low, flat ground beside the Narew that has flooded every spring for centuries. Three rivers run through town, the Narew, the Omulew and the Czeczotka, and kayaks set off down the Omulew. Grodzisko "Stare Miasto" marks the old stronghold, while Pomnik Józefa Bema recalls the battles fought here.
For anyone who grew up here, the map is the riverbanks, the station and every street in between.
