Oselver boat
Bjørnafjorden
Oseana
Osøyro lies on the shore of the Fusafjorden, south of Bergen on the Bergen Peninsula, with the car ferry to Fusa leaving from its east side. The village grew up between the farms Os and Hauge, on a flat stretch of land where the Oselva river meets the sea, and takes its name from both.
What makes Osøyro its own is the oselver, the boat type that carries the name of Os and is bound up with the place. Over time the farm settlement became the administrative centre of Bjørnafjorden Municipality, with Os Church, the cultural centre Oseana and Os gymnas in the middle of town. For a while there was a railway too: the Nesttun–Os line tied the village to Bergen until it closed, and today the E39 carries the traffic north. Around the centre, housing areas spread out towards villages like Søvik, Hagavik and Søre Øyane, with Vognhallen and the hotel at Solstrand among the familiar names.
Out in the fjord lie the islets of Raudholmane naturreservat and Sandholmane naturreservat, small specks on the map that anyone who has rowed an oselver past them will recognise.
