Student life

Between the Wiehen Hills and the northern tip of the Teutoburg Forest – known as the Osning until the 19th century – the River Hase runs through a valley, and in it lies Osnabrück. The city grew up as a marketplace beside the bishopric Charlemagne founded in 780.

What gives Osnabrück its everyday character is its mix. Large numbers of students at the university and the university of applied sciences keep the streets lively, while firms in the car, paper and steel trades keep it working. Although the city sits in Lower Saxony, it is considered Westphalian by history, culture and language. It was also home to the largest British garrison outside the United Kingdom. The Altstadt, heavily damaged in the war, was rebuilt faithfully after medieval designs, and the Kulturgeschichtliches Museum, the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus and the Hexengang sit within easy reach of each other.

If you studied here, served here or simply never stopped calling it home, this is your Osnabrück, every lane of it.
