Silesian Uprisings memory
Orzesze stayed a village for centuries and only became a town in 1962, though it dates back to the Middle Ages. Its name refers to a place where nuts grow, which is why a golden hazel bush stands on its blue coat of arms.
For the people who live here, it is a place of forest and quiet hills on the southern edge of the Silesian Highlands. More than half the town is woodland, two rivers, the Gostynia and the Bierawka, rise within its borders, and the Góra św. Wawrzyńca looks out over it all. It also carries a grief that the community has not forgotten: in September 1939 German forces killed 29 people from the town in the nearby Pasternik forest, and the Pomnik - grobowiec "Na Pasternioku" marks where they lie. The Pomnik Powstańców Śląskich honours those who fought in the Silesian Uprisings.
If Orzesze is home, you know its forest paths, its hazel and its quiet neighbourhoods. Take a little of it with you.
