River Orkla
Orkanger is known for work. The industrial area at Grønøra, just west of where the river Orkla meets the fjord, is one of the most important in Central Norway, home to the smelter Elkem Thamshavn and the food plant Norsk Kylling. The town is the commercial centre of Orkland Municipality, and together with neighbouring Fannrem it forms one of the largest urban areas in Trøndelag.
Thamspaviljongen is one of the places that keeps the older story, and the Thamshavn Line is another. Ore once came down by rail from Løkken Verk to the port of Thamshavn, just north of the centre; part of the old line, from Bårdshaug, now runs as a heritage railway. For decades a steamship, the SS Orkla, also sailed from here to Trondheim. Orkanger Church, the stage at Torgscenen and the riverside park Elvebredden make up the everyday centre.
The town even has its own song, Orkangersangen. For anyone who grew up between Grønøra and Rødåsen, the map of Orkanger is the map of school days at Follo and every drive along the fjord towards Trondheim.
