Commuter suburb
Ølstykke sits in North Zealand where the road from Slangerup to Roskilde meets the railway to Frederikssund, with Stenløse so close that the two have grown into one: Ølstykke-Stenløse, the largest urban area in Egedal Municipality. Commuting by S-train into Copenhagen is part of daily life here, and the town keeps its own library, its station and two churches, Udlejre Kirke and Ølstykke Kirke.
What sets the place apart is how it began. The station came first, on open land hemmed in by the bog of Lyngen, and a small community grew up around it, known in its early days for horse breeding and a stud. Then a building consortium bought farmland such as Ørnebjerg and turned it into neighbourhoods of detached houses, with new schools, roads, cycle paths and footpaths to match. Older traces remain all around: ancient sites like Stuehøj and Maglehøj, and the lake of Skenkelsø to the west.
And at the edge of it all stands Skenkelsø Mølle, the old windmill that now keeps the town's history as a museum, still one of the first things people name when they talk about home in Ølstykke.
