Known for

Medieval walls

Olkusz is known for silver. Shallow seams of it, together with lead, drew miners here in the early Middle Ages, the royal mines made the town one of the most important in Lesser Poland, and King Stephen Báthory founded a royal mint here. Everyday life still revolves around the preserved market square, the old defensive walls and the Gothic basilica, Kościół pw. Świętego Andrzeja Apostoła w Olkuszu, while Podziemny Olkusz takes you below the streets and the Museum of African Studies offers something nobody expects.

The town lies on the Baba river on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, halfway along the road between Będzin and Kraków, on the railway linking Upper Silesia and Zagłębie with Kielce. The Starczynów Desert lies close by, and its wind-blown sand troubled the town until the desert was planted with trees. Francesco Nullo, killed in the January Uprising at nearby Krzykawka, rests in the Grób Płk. Francesco Nullo in the cemetery.

Kościół pw. Świętego Andrzeja Apostoła w Olkuszu has stood over the square since the town grew rich on silver – reason enough to carry its outline with you.
