Hanseatic past

Inside the St. Plechelmus, more than a thousand years of Oldenzaal meet under one roof. The missionary Plechelmus may have founded the first church on this spot around 765, and Bishop Balderic of Utrecht, himself from the town, later attached a chapter to it, making Oldenzaal the most important religious centre in Twente.

The city that grew around it has been through a great deal. It received city rights in 1249, belonged to the Hanseatic League as a subsidiary of Deventer, burned almost completely in 1492 and changed hands again and again in the Eighty Years' War, until Ernst Casimir of Nassau took it for good in 1626. Yet the memory most locals share is a lighter one: carnival, when Oldenzaal becomes 'Boeskool-stad', Cabbage Town, and the parade of towering floats rolls through the streets. Between carnivals, the Palthe Huis and the Marktsteen keep the older story in view.

Coming in along the A1, or stepping off the train from Hengelo, you turn towards the basilica, and the streets around it tell you that you are home.
