Brickworks
Elmer Niklander
Oitti manor
On the slope of Töyrynmäki, below the manor house of Oitti, lies Huvilampi, a little pond made by the brickworks owner Oskar Forström when he dammed the ditch running below the hill and laid out a park around it. Today it is part of an ordinary, busy village. Oitti is the administrative centre of Hausjärvi, with the municipal office and the main library, the municipality's only upper secondary school, a supermarket, a restaurant, a pharmacy and a disc golf course along Umpistentie. Local trains on the Riihimäki–Lahti line stop at Oitti station.
The sports field carries the name of Elmer Niklander, the Olympic discus champion who came from here, and for years the textile artist Eija Rasinmäki ran a rag-rug weaving workshop in the village. Before that, Oitti was a brick town: the clay soil and the railway between Riihimäki and Saint Petersburg brought brickworks here, along with sawmilling, weaving and metalwork. Even the name is practical, coming from a ditched field, Ojitupelto, unusual in its day.
Walk down to Nahkurinoja and you will find the old log mill still standing by the water, with a three-storey granary beside the ditch nearby, survivors from the days when the manor ruled the slope.
