Huguenot heritage
Only the river separates Offenbach from Frankfurt's eastern districts, and the two cities have grown so close on the Main that they now form one continuous built-up area. The Bieber and the Hainbach brooks run through town, and a large forest spreads across the south of the city.
The place has a cosmopolitan feel that goes back a long way. Huguenots arrived in the 17th century, brought their knowledge of tobacco and turned Offenbach into a centre for rolling cigars; Goethe and Mozart both came visiting; and today it has the highest share of residents with a migrant background of any large German city. In the 20th century the economy ran on machine-building, leather-making and typography, and the Deutsches Ledermuseum and the Klingspor Museum keep those trades in view, with the Büsing Palais nearby. The design school and the German weather service give the city its present-day character.
Picture the riverbank by the Isenburger Schloss, the lowest point in town, where the counts of Isenburg moved their residence to the Main and where Offenbach's own story really begins.
