Industrial heritage

At the Gasometer Oberhausen, an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage, the Ruhr's working past has become something people travel to see. Oberhausen has a habit of turning what it has into culture: the International Short Film Festival has been held here since 1954, and the Oberhausen Manifesto carries the city's name into film history. Rot-Weiß Oberhausen play at the Niederrheinstadion on the banks of the Rhine–Herne Canal, and the Turbinenhalle has become a fixture of German wrestling.

The city lies on the Emscher in the western Ruhr, between Duisburg and Essen, at the point where the Lower Rhine plain meets the industrial heartland. It is compact – the smallest area of any German city of its size, and one of the most densely populated – and divided into three boroughs: Alt-Oberhausen, Osterfeld and Sterkrade. Schloss Oberhausen gave the railway station its name, and the station gave the name to the town.

Wherever you have moved on to, you will find your own street somewhere between the Schloss, the Siedlung Eisenheim and the slag heap of the Knappenhalde.
