Dueholm Kloster
The Limfjord
Island capital
At Dueholm Kloster, the old monastery, the story of Nykøbing Mors begins. Today it is part of a museum, but the town grew up around it, and the king and the monastery between them once owned most of it. Dansk Støberimuseum tells of a later age, when the town had an iron foundry, brickworks and breweries.
Nykøbing lies on the east coast of the island of Mors in the Limfjord, beside the Sallingsund, the sound between Mors and the Salling peninsula. The Sallingsund Bridge to the south is the road out to the rest of Jutland. This is the largest town on the island and its cultural centre, and half of all islanders live in and around it. The town once had a shipyard where the brigantine Søren Larsen was built, and just outside it, on a spit of land, is a cricket ground that has hosted international matches.
Aksel Sandemose was born here, and the town is said to be his model for Jante. Walk through Østre Anlæg on a quiet evening and the place feels a good deal kinder than the novel.
